Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory Minister, Aliyu Umar announced recently that some 80 streets will be renamed in the country's administrative capital and the new street names will more closely reflect the cultural and historical relevance of Africans. Streets will be re-named after legendary Black people like: Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Bob Marley, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.
The rebranding will come in the near future and streets named after former military governors; said to be absolutely inappropriate, according to Minister Umar will be stripped of their old names. The Minister said this move comes as an effort to salute Nigeria's democracy since for more than half of the country's 48 years of independence, Nigeria has been ruled by military forces.
The move also celebrates literary icons and sports heroes. Nobel Prize winners, Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe; as well as Nigerian sports heroes, Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo and Mary Onyali will all have streets named after them.
Others to be honoured by having steets in Abuja suburb named after them are: leading opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar and African Nationalist, Marcus Garvey and Rosa Parks; all of whom were an integral part of Nigeria's consciousness and history.
